CSB Chairperson Vanessa Sutherland anticipates ‘collaborative’ tenure

Washington – Chemical Safety Board Chairperson Vanessa Sutherland anticipates “a highly productive and collaborative experience” as she begins her five-year tenure as head of the agency.

Sutherland issued a statement Aug. 24 outlining her professional background and her dedication to safety. She was confirmed by the Senate on Aug. 5 to replace ousted former Chairman Rafael Moure-Eraso, whose term was clouded by allegations of mismanagement and intimidation.

In the statement, Sutherland emphasized the importance of the agency’s mission.

“As I said at my confirmation hearing, I believe that safety is a shared responsibility,” Sutherland wrote. “That responsibility extends far beyond the corridors of K Street (in Washington) as well as a facility’s fence lines. Safety extends into the homes and communities that are most impacted by the devastating accidents that the CSB is responsible for investigating – accidents that forever affect families and communities.

“I am excited to lead the CSB in executing its important mission – together, we can and will achieve meaningful safety change that works towards the elimination of and mitigation of serious chemical accidents, and protects workers, the public and the environment.”
